Milt Simon, Director

The Auburn Community Band is now starting its 26th concert season. Each summer, since 1982, the group has been presenting free outdoor performances every Wednesday evening in downtown Auburn. These concerts take place at Festival Plaza on Main Street, one block south of Great Falls Plaza. The group's weekly programs are scheduled for June 13 through August 22 (weather permitting). Concert times are 7:00 to 8:15 p.m., and ample free parking is available in the parking garage across the street.

Conductor and Director Milt Simon first organized the community band during the winter of 1981. Some 15-20 area residents participated that first year. Most of these individuals had not played their instruments since their high school days 30-40 years ago. Simon named the group the Auburn Community Band and, for the first several seasons, audiences at their summer concerts numbered from 50 to 100 people.

Today, the organization averages 50 volunteer musicians (actual number varies from season to season) ranging in age from their teens to their 80's.  Band members reside in many different cities and towns, representing approximately 15 central and southern Maine communities. Their summer outdoor concerts typically attract an average of 400-500 people every week, and each 75-minute performance offers a different program of music that always include well-known songs which are popular with both young and old. The band is co-sponsored by the Auburn Parks & Recreation Department,  HRH Northern New England, and Gleason Media Services.
